On 15/12/2011 Sony released a Firmware update for the Nex 5 camera. Using the most up to date firmware will provide your camera a stable software and extra features.

The if you have installed the previous firmware the only change you will see is the compatibility with Mount Adaptor ” LA-EA2 “. You should know that ” Face Detection “and ” Smile Shutter ” functions do not work when using ” LA-EA2 ” Mount Adaptor.

I have just found a good question regarding Sony Nex 5 camera. The question was posted on Yahoo answers and it was “What are the best under 200 dollar cameras that can decently compare to the Sony nex-5?”

The user Jim A who answer it and I share the same opinion. The short answer is that the under 200 dollars cameras are inferior to Sony Nex 5.

First of all these cheap digital cameras have small sensors because they are compact. Most point and shoot have tiny sensors and this is shown in the lack of image quality.

To get clear images with a hi level of details you will need a large sensor. Although Nex 5 has a compact design the 14.2 megapixels Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor is large (APS-C size). This means you photos will be quality images.

In plus the Sony Nex 5 has the capability of recording 1080i HD movies and it offers a cool feature called Sweep Panorama with 3D. This feature allows the user to capture extra-wide images and view in 3D on compatible TV. To use this feature you may need a firmware update. I will post the link to the firmware update soon because there are many people asking for one.

Another useful feature of Nex 5 is the ability to capture fast-moving action with rapid burst shooting up to 7 frames per second. I haven’t seen this feature on the under $200 cameras.

Don’t forgot about the interchangeable-lens which are one of the Sony Nex 5 main benefits. The cheaper cameras don’t come with the capability to use interchangeable lens.

In conclusion

What differentiate the Nex 5 form the cheaper digital cameras models are:

the size of its sensor which is large (APS-C size) and a large sensor means a better image quality
the ability to use interchangeable lens
the ability to record Full HD movies

In plus the Sony Nex 5 has some extra features, like Sweep Panoramas, which can’t be found on cheaper models .
